For its fourth Instagram take-over by photographers from around the world, Carnegie Council presents work by Rena Effendi (@renaeffendiphoto).
Effendi was born in Baku, Azerbaijan and grew up in the USSR, witnessing her country's rough path to independence—one marred by war, political instability, and economic collapse. The chaotic '90s strongly impacted the way Effendi perceives photography, as she attempted to make visual sense of the grim world that surrounded her.
Effendi's early work focused on the oil industry's effects on people's lives in her region. She has won several international awards, including the Prince Claus Fund Award for Culture and Development and two awards in the 2014 World Press Photo Observed Portraits categories.
