ANJA KASPERSEN: I am very excited to welcome Sam Gregory, the Executive Director of WITNESS, a global human rights and civic journalism network that assists people in using video and technology to defend human rights. He is an internationally recognized, award-winning human rights advocate, technologist, and expert in smartphone witnessing, deepfakes, media authenticity, and generative artificial intelligence (AI).

Sam, a huge welcome. It is a treat to talk with you today.

SAM GREGORY: I am really excited to be here to talk with you.

ANJA KASPERSEN: You spent your professional life focusing on how emerging technologies impact grassroots media, mainstream media, and democratic accountability, and how to empower people to both act and protect human rights in a digital reality. To help our listeners get to know you better and understand what has been driving this strong engagement over the years, can you share how and when this journey started for you?

SAM GREGORY: I have been working in this broad field of how both human rights defenders and journalists use technology but also how technology is shaped by human rights and the needs of these frontline information workers for close to 25 years. There are these recurring constants that shape that work, like: How do you think about questions of trust, which are incredibly visible to us right now, how do you think about questions of safety, security, and consent, and how do think about the efficacy of both individual journalists and human rights defenders trying to share important information but also the information ecosystem?
