Mulgan, renowned for his work on technology's societal implications, shares insights from his varied career in policy, academia, and technology. They explore the evolving landscape of AI and its broader societal implications and the "billionaire problem," which underscores the urgent need for informed leadership and innovative institutional design in navigating these transformative times.

ANJA KASPERSEN: Welcome to our special episode with Geoff Mulgan, a renowned expert in social innovation, public policy, and technology, celebrated for his influential work on the implications of technology in society and governance. Geoff’s list of achievements is extensive, but we will touch on a few notable ones, with a full list available in the transcript.

He currently serves as professor of collective intelligence, public policy, and social innovation at University College London (UCL). His past roles include chief executive of Nesta, visiting professor at University College London and The University of Melbourne, and significant positions in UK politics spanning many years. Holding a doctorate in telecommunications, Geoff is also an accomplished author, known for his bold and, in my view, very important writings on a variety of subjects, including social innovation and ways of stimulating social and political imagination.

We are incredibly honored to have Geoff Mulgan with us today to reflect on the year 2023, talk about his latest book, and also to look ahead to 2024, a year likely to be as paradigm shifting as this one.

Welcome, Geoff. It is so nice to have you with us.

GEOFF MULGAN: Thank you very much, Anja. It is great to be with you all today.

ANJA KASPERSEN: Let’s dig into some questions to unpack a little bit your journey and that of your scholarship, Geoff. Through your extensive journey across various fields you have gained profound insights into the role of technology in our society. Could you share with us how this journey unfolded? What pivotal moments or influences, if I may, led you to this deep interest in the intersection of technology, society, and governance?
