Brenda Almond is emeritus professor of moral and social philosophy at the University of Hull, United Kingdom. She is an elected overseas member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and was awarded an Honorary doctorate by the University of Utrecht in Holland. Almond is known for her involvement in the promotion of applied philosophy and applied ethics. She was a founding member of the Society for Applied Philosophy and joint editor (with Anthony O'Hear) of the Journal of Applied Philosophy.
Almond is the author of a number of books or monographs, including Exploring Ethics: a traveller's tale (Blackwell, 1998) and The Fragmenting Family (Oxford University Press, 2006, 2008). She has published papers, journal articles and articles in the national press, early publications appearing under the name of Cohen. She was a member of the HFEA (Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority) (1988–2001) and is currently a member of the Human Genetics Commission. She is president of the Philosophical Society of England and vice-president of the Society for Applied Philosophy.
