Bio
David Malone is rector of United Nations University and under-secretary-general of the UN.
A Canadian national, Malone previously served as Canada’s International Development Research Centre from 2008 to 2013. From 2006 to 2008, he was Canada's high commissioner to India, and non-resident ambassador to Bhutan and Nepal. From 2004 to 2006, Malone served as assistant deputy minister for global issues at Canada's Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT). From 1998 to 2004, he was president of the International Peace Academy (now International Peace Institute).
In addition, Malone served as Canada's representative to the UN Economic and Social Council and as ambassador and deputy permanent representative of Canada to the United Nations from 1990 to 1994 and as director general of the policy, international organizations and global issues bureaus within DFAIT from 1994 to 1998.
Malone is the co-editor of Nepal in Transition: From People’s War to Fragile Peace and the author of Does the Elephant Dance? Contemporary Indian Foreign Policy, among other books.
